Well, there are a couple of reasons why you have to find out who you’re up against.

For example, you should learn which are their most well-performing articles, what keywords drive them the most traffic, their domain authority, etc.
Secondly, your competitors would be the creators that will teach you more about blogging than any blogging course you’ll ever take.

You sure think that there are many, many websites.

I think that it is.
As a newbie, you might find WordPress intimidating. But it doesn’t have to be.

1) Install Only Necessary Plugins
Installing too many plugins will negatively affect your site’s speed.
After one of the recent Google updates, blog speed is one of the top factors that will influence your rankings.
Therefore, you need to keep the number of your plugins to the absolute minimum.
These are the essential ones:
- Backup plugin – backing up your site is crucial. On average, over 30,000 sites are getting hacked every single day. You need protection from that. Personally, my hosting provider is backing up my site daily for me. If yours doesn’t do that, you’ll need to install a plugin – an UpDraft is a great option.
- Yoast SEO – this plugin is not flawless, but it will give you pointers about SEO-optimizing your articles. The free version is decent, so there is no need to invest in the premium one.
- Social Media Sharing Plugin – I’m talking about a plugin that will add Social Media sharing buttons to your site. There are literally hundreds of those, so choose wisely.
2) Install Google Analytics
Installing Google Analytics is one of those blogging tips for new bloggers that is practically a no-brainer.
Having a blog means having a business. Likewise, you need data that will show you how your business is doing.
That’s what Google Analytics is for – it will tell you how well your content is performing.
For example, you’ll see what pages drive the most traffic, your bounce rate, where your traffic is coming from, etc.
Knowing all that will help you adjust your strategy and make improvements where needed.
These days, you can install the Google Analytics code manually or you can get a plugin to do it for you.

Well, you do – non-compressed images are too big of a size.
You can’t afford to have them on your blog because they will destroy your site’s speed.

4) Set Your Permalinks To Post Name
Heads up, setting up your permalinks has to happen before you publish your first article.
If you choose to do it later, it will change the structure of your published URLs.
As a result, 404 errors will appear.
Permalinks will affect your SEO, so you need to take that seriously.
Go to Settings – Permalinks – choose Post Name.
Once you do that, there is no need to worry about it ever again.

As a newbie blogger, you need to start working on your SEO skills from the get-go.
That’s necessary to rank your articles on the top of the search results for the keywords you’re targeting.
1) Understand User Intent
Before you begin brainstorming keywords to target, you have to educate yourself about user intent.
By all means, what Google aims is to always provide readers with the most relevant results to their search queries.
So, if you want your content to rank well online, your blog posts have to offer the most relevant information.
For that to happen, your content needs to satisfy user intent.
How do you do that?
Basically, look at the tops results on the topic you plan to explore on your blog’s pages.
Google already sees these articles as the most relevant to the search query.

First and foremost, on-page SEO is just one component of SEO as a whole.

- Keyword Density – include your keyword in your title, first paragraph, image alt tag, subheadings, and meta description.
Again, these are just a few pointers about optimizing your content by targeting keywords.

While researching the top results for your chosen keyword will help you a lot, it’s not enough to boost your SEO efforts.

Alt text (also known as alt description) will appear on the screen if the image fails to load.
That text not only helps visually impaired readers understand the image but assists Google when crawling and ranking your site.

Pro Tip: don’t add your main keyword as an alt tag to all your images. Overoptimizing your photos will not work in your favor. Therefore, place your keyword in the alt description only where it makes sense.

When you commit to blogging, you’ll have to write daily, at least at the beginning.
But what are the best blogging tips for writers?
Here is my take on that:
1) Keep Your Strive For Perfection In Check
I get it – thousands of people now have the chance to read the content you’re putting out there.
Naturally, you want to offer the best piece of writing you possibly can every time you hit the publish button.
However, you need to get rid of your desire for perfection.
While that’s easier said than done, putting the effort will pay off in the long run.
No one is going to judge you if your writing abilities are not of a best-selling author.
Furthermore, your writing skills will improve over time.
So, spread your voice, and don’t be afraid to get personal – your readers will appreciate that.
2) Create An Editorial Content Calendar
Quite frankly, most newbie bloggers are all over their heads in their early blogging days.
And that’s just normal:
There is so much to do!
Trying to get everything done in what you might consider a timely manner is probably an impossible goal to achieve.
Having an editorial calendar will take a lot of the pressure off.
A publishing calendar will allow you to stay on track with your publishing goals.
Evaluate how much time you can devote to blogging, create a realistic publishing calendar and stick to it.
Once you do that, you won’t have to worry about falling behind on your posting schedule.
3) Write Consistently

You might think that typing each day is something you’ll have no problem handling.
As time goes by, though, exhaustion and burnout will settle in.
What are you supposed to do when that happens?
Don’t get me wrong – you don’t have to post daily if such a schedule is impossible for you to maintain.
Still, publishing more frequently will advance your blog big time, especially if your site is brand new.
If you lack discipline, now is the time to develop some!
4) Research And Fact-Check Your Articles Before Publishing
The research phase is crucial for every professional blogger.
Before you publish an article online, fact-check it first.
Now, you may think that you don’t have to do this when you write about topics you know inside and out.
I would say – do the research anyway.
Nothing stays the same for too long.
With that said, are you sure that the product or service you’re reviewing:
- has the same price?
- doesn’t have any new features?
- even exists anyomore?
Personally, I lost count on how many times I landed on pages offering content that clearly hasn’t been researched as well as it should have.
When that happens, the reader has no choice but to go through a lousy experience.
And that’s the last thing you want for your visitors.
5) Regularly Update Old Content
Generally, when you start a blog, you want to create as much content as possible.
At some point, though, you’ll need to go back and update your articles.
That’s necessary for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, you want to avoid the situation I’ve just described in the previous paragraph. No visitor will return to your blog if its pages are not up to date and fill with links that don’t work.
Secondly, Google loves fresh content. The biggest search engine tends to favor newer articles over a couple of years old ones.
Google sees those pages as content that offers the most relevant information. And you have to keep Google happy if you want unlimited organic traffic to your blog.
Lastly, updating old content will allow you to add more relevant internal links. Interlinking your content is an important part of the on-page SEO you’ll need to perform.
It helps the search engines to understand better the structure of your site.
6) Learn To Write Clickable Headlines
Coming up with compelling article titles is an art on its own. Mastering it will take some time, for sure.
But you’ll have to become good at crafting headlines eventually.
Your post’s title is the first thing your readers will see.
If that title is not enticing enough to give them a reason to click on your article, they’re not going to.
What’s the point of spending hours creating the best piece of content you possibly can if no one cares to click and read it?
To help you in that department, I would suggest running your title through a headline optimizer.
There are a couple of those you can use for free. They will give you pointers on how you can improve your headlines and make them more enticing.
7) Write For Skimmers
Ok, that’s probably the last thing you would see on a list of blogging tips for newbies, but I have to say it:
Most people will not read your whole article. Even worse, they might skip reading 90% of it.
Unfortunately, these days it seems like no one has the patience or the desire to read a piece of content from start to finish.
To improve the chance of your words not going to total waste, you’ll need to learn to write for skimmers. Meaning, you’ll have to write for people who will scan your article instead of reading it.
How do you do that?
Well, nobody can guarantee that your readers won’t skim your post anyway.
But you can reduce the odds of that happening if you:
- use enticing headings and subheadings
- add lists and bullet points
- keep your paragraphs short
- avoid huge blocks of text
8) Aim To Publish Longer Posts
By all means, many established bloggers will tell you that your article’s length depends on the problem you’re solving for your readers.
In other words, you should keep adding content to your post until it answers the question or eliminates the problem you’re covering.
Sometimes, you might be able to do that in 700 or fewer words.
Is that word count enough?
Actually, it isn’t – even if your content achieved its purpose.
Years ago, Google was fine with thin content of around 300 words or something similar.
Nowadays, the situation is different.
According to statistics, longer blog posts are performing much better than shorter ones.
On average, a 2,000 words long article has a better chance to outrank your competitors who upload shorter content.
Of course, word count is just one tiny factor that will affect your rankings. Still, you do not use it to your advantage?
9) Create Skyscraper Articles
Are you familiar with Brian Dean’s Skyscraper Technique?
If you’re not, now is the time to learn all about it.
Basically, it’s a process where you find a popular article in your niche, create a much better piece of content, and steal the backlinks the original post is getting.
It’s a smart way to increase the number of quality backlinks to your website.
However, it’s not an easy technique to pull off, especially when you’re a beginner.
Still, it’s worth the time and the effort.

10) Make Your Content Worth Referencing
Honestly, I think that’s one of the most valuable blogging tips for new bloggers on this list.
But what does an article worth a reference look like?
Well, it’s not that complicated to evaluate whether your post is worth the mention or not.
During the writing process, keep asking yourself:
- Is my work original?
- Does it represent a unique point of you?
- Would people love it enough to share it on Social Media or send it to a friend?
In case the answer is no, start over.
Don’t hold back on expressing your honest opinion about the topic you’re discussing.
Adding your voice will make that article different than anything else that’s already out there.
11) Create Evergreen Content
I doubt this is the first time you see the term evergreen content.
Since every blogger will advise you to stick to it, I’m sure I’m not making headlines here.
There is a reason why experienced bloggers are encouraging beginners to keep the evergreen factor in mind when writing articles.
After all, evergreen content is something that will stay relevant forever.
Its appeal won’t fade in time. And that will allow you to keep making the best of that content over and over again.
For example, an evergreen article will continue to get tons of traffic for a very long time. Subsequently, you’ll be able to keep monetizing it repeatedly.
12) Write In A Manner That Encourages Conversation
More likely than not, you already know that conversational tone goes a long way when you’re a blogger.
Aside from that, what else do you do to keep the conversation with your audience going?
Are you asking your readers questions? Do you care about their opinion on the topic you’re covering?
Nobody enjoys a blog post that reads like an academic dissertation.
So, make your visitors feel like they’re a part of the content creation process.
A great place to do that is in your closing paragraph.

Needless to say, you have to treat it with the care and respect it deserves.

Once again, I stray from originality – everyone is saying how important an email list to a blogger is.
And everyone is right!
Starting an email list as soon as you launch your blog is a must.
You might think that it’s too early and you don’t have anything worthy to offer to your readers yet.
Even if that’s the case, begin working on your list anyway.
Collecting email addresses is not something you can afford to delay.
Your subscribers will be your most loyal fans. Establishing a closer connection with them will benefit your business tremendously.
Now, what email service should you use?
Personally, I’m using ConvertKit, and I can’t recommend it enough.
ConvertKit is incredibly simple to use, and it will make your email campaigns easy to handle.

Truth be told, prompting your readers to sign up for your email newsletter will not bring you a high conversion.

Basically, you’ll need to create a lead magnet.
Offering incentives will boost the conversion rate you’re having so far between 2-7%.
Depending on what you blog about, you can always find an idea for a great incentive.
Don’t underestimate the power of the lead magnets – everyone loves free stuff!
Give your readers something valuable for free, and they will gladly give you their email address in return.
3) Have More Than One Lead Magnet
Let’s face it – you can’t use the same incentive on all of your pages.
The incentive you’re offering on one of your posts might not make sense on another.
A lead magnet can only achieve its purpose when you use it strategically.
There is a simple solution – create multiple lead magnets and place them where they have a better chance to convert.

I don’t think so, and neither should you.

Quite frankly, you can look at this as the second part of the previous paragraph.
Taking the time to leave a comment on a blog that operates in your niche has its advantages.

Also, it will help you increase the number of your own followers.
Sometimes, it might even boost your blog traffic.
5) Get On Pinterest
Love it or hate it, Pinterest is not something you should ignore as a blogger.
Basically, Pinterest is a visual search engine you can use to drive traffic to your website.
While it takes some time to build a presence on it, it’s worth the time and the effort.
With that said, don’t waste a minute and create a Pinterest business account today if you don’t have one already.

By all means, don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Taking the subject of actionable content up a notch, let’s talk about your call to action.
What does having a clear call to action means?

Creating infographics is something you might find particularly challenging when you’re a beginner blogger.
Be that as it may, you should seriously consider having some within your posts.
If you can’t do them yourself, you can find professionals that can help you.
Why does posting infographics matter?
Firstly, because they’re an essential tool every respected brand is taking advantage of at one point or another.
Secondly, because most visitors won’t bother reading your whole post. Looking at an infographic that tells them everything they need to know will leave a mark in their mind, though.
Lastly, infographics are often a magnet for high-quality backlinks from authoritative websites.
Not every article needs an infographic. But try to upload one to the posts you consider cornerstone content.
2) Get Ideas From Your Audience
Chances are, you think you know what your readers want from you. We all have been there!
At some point, however, you may realize that what you want to write about and what your audience wants to read are two different things.
Again, most bloggers are familiar with the feeling.
What are you supposed to do if that happens to you too?
In my opinion, you can avoid finding yourself repeatedly in that situation if you bother to listen to your audience.
Connect with your readers on Social Media and see what questions and problems they have on their minds.
Then, use the ideas your people will gladly provide you with, and build your future posts around them.
3) Understand Your Audience
Since we’re on the subject already, let’s dwell on it further:
Above all, you need to put the effort and learn to understand your readers better than they understand themselves.
Just think about it:
Sometimes, in order to lead, first, you have to follow. Meaning, you need to become a member of the fanbase one day you’re hoping to lead.
How do you do that?
One way to make sure that your future work will resonate with your readers is to simply ask them what they would like to see you do next.
Place that question in your weekly email, latest tweet, or your LinkedIn network.
Trust me, you won’t regret it!
4) Love Your Existing Readers
I know, being fond of your readers sounds like one of those blogging tips for new bloggers that don’t need a mention.
Still, do you love your already existing audience? Is your mind constantly preoccupied with ways to expand it further?
Don’t get me wrong – no well-established blogger would mind seeing their blog traffic increasing month after month.
Getting obsessed with reaching new people to the point where you completely ignore the ones you already have is just a stupid thing to do, though.
From time to time, take a moment of your busy day and find a find to show your readers that you appreciate them.
Give them the love they deserve, and they will reciprocate by helping you grow your blog.
5) Focus On Quality Over Quantity
With all this talk about the audience’s input in your next article, you probably start feeling like you should write all the time.
After all, you have to satisfy every want and need your readers have, correct?
So, you better begin pumping out as much content as you possibly can!
Actually, not so fast:
One of the core fundamentals of successful blogging is putting quality over quantity.
Given the choice of tons of half-cooked content and fewer articles done brilliantly, always go for the latter.
Usually, most of your traffic will come from around 20% of your blog posts.
Instead of publishing more and more for the sake of posting, focus on the articles that are already bringing you the most views.
Make those posts the best they can be and create more content on similar topics since you already know they work for your audience.
It’s all about following the rule of making more of what’s working.
6) Incorporate Storytelling Within Your Content
I’ve just told you to make your well-performing articles the best they can be, didn’t I?
OK, but what does that entail?
I’ll tell you what – sharing a good story is a sure bet to improve your posts.
While numbers, statistics, and facts matter a lot, telling a great story matters much more.
Do your best to help your readers recognize themselves in the story you’re creating, and the results will come instantly.
Some of those results will be reduced bounce rate, longer time on page, and even reading your whole piece of content.
A story without a hero people can’t root for is no story at all.
For example, the hero of my story today is the brand new blogger who struggles to navigate his way within the complicated universe of blogging.
All newbie bloggers will empathize, considering his journey reminds them of their own.
7) Set Realistic Blogging Goals
Quality over quantity, respect for the audience, storytelling… Got it!
Now that you know exactly what to do as a blogger, doing it fast will assure your success.
Maybe, maybe not.
Every blogging journey is different. Some bloggers find success faster than others.
Depending on many factors (blog niche, competition, available time), the results you’re getting may vary from the ones fellow bloggers are enjoying.
Don’t let that influence you.
Will you get 100,000 pageviews in the first month after launching your blog? Probably not.
With rare exceptions, you won’t see such blog traffic for a while.
To avoid any disappointment and for the sake of your mental health, set blogging goals that reflect the reality you’re living in.
8) Invest In The Right Blogging Tools
Building your blog may seem a lot of fun at the beginning, but don’t forget that it’s a business.
As such, it will require a few necessary investments on your part.
Quite frankly, no business can pop up and evolve completely for free.
You’ll need blogging tools to help you run it smoothly.
Different businesses will require different tools, and you’ll have to pay for some of them.
Put some effort into increasing your blogging budget and get what you need for your business.
That’s an investment that will pay off in the long run.
9) Don’t Wait To Learn Everything
Is it getting scary yet?
Hopefully, it isn’t – intimidating you is not the goal of this list of blogging tips for new bloggers.
But if some of you are feeling overwhelmed after reading thus far, let me put your mind at ease:
No one knows everything. Even the most successful bloggers in the world don’t.
Blogging is a constantly changing medium. What worked ten years ago doesn’t work right now.
Therefore, don’t hold launching your blog back until you learn everything.
A much better strategy is to rip off the blog bandage, start creating, and learn as you go.
Practice makes perfect.
And you won’t get any real practice if you keep staring at the blank page.
10) Give It Time
Patience is a virtue.
That applies with full force for your blogging journey as well, and not just your life.
At this point, you may have heard that blogging is a marathon, not a sprint.
Well, that is true.
So, if you’re thinking of giving up at the 6-month mark if you’re not selling tons of results there, you shouldn’t be a blogger.
Do you think that any kind of business will start to bring you thousands of dollars in the first 30 days?
Most likely, it will not. And neither will your blog.
Long story short, you have to give your site the time it needs to become even more than you imagine right now!
