the best free blogging platforms

Well, call them what you want - blogging platforms, blogging sites...  It doesn't really matter because they're literally the same thing.  If you're on the verge of starting a blog, you'll need to have at least a basic understanding of these terms.  And if going easy on your pocket is a must, then choosing from the best free blogging platforms seems like a smart idea.

Quite frankly, being a newbie blogger can be a really frustrating experience.

But knowing that your website has a strong foundation will take some of your anxiety away for sure.

So, let's focus on that, shall we?

This post may contain affiliate links, see my disclosure here.

What Is A Blogging Platform?

First and foremost, we shouldn't be talking about the best free blogging platforms until you know what exactly a blogging platform is.

I mean, the post you're currently reading is for absolute beginners and that speaks a volume, doesn't?

Anyhow, a long, long, long time ago, if a person was building a website from scratch, that person had to sweat for ages, writing tons of lines of code.

Nowadays, though, you won't have to endure anything even remotely similar to what our blogging predecessors went through:

Currently, there are blogging platforms that will do all of the heavy tech lifting for you.

A blogging platform is a software/service that will allow you to upload your content on the web.  To clarify, that software accommodates pre-coded templates.

In other words, you can take "writing a code" off your blogging to-do list and never think about it again.

Are The Best Free Blogging Platforms The Right Fit For You?

Before we go any further, there are certain things you need to know where free blogging sites are being concerned.

Above all, they come with limitations.  Meaning, you won't be able to do whatever you may want to do with your blog.

For instance, your options for earning an ad income, accessing essential blogging tools and plugins, or using a premium theme will be strictly controlled.

Not to mention, owning your domain name will become a tricky business to deal with as well.

So, if your sole reason for starting a blog is to turn it into a money-making machine, the free blogging platforms won't cut through the red tape.

That being said, you should know that you can always move from a free blogging site when you're ready to monetize your content.

For now, let's talk about which platforms will allow you to start your blogging journey without paying anything at all! - one of the best free blogging platforms

First and foremost, they may look the same, but there is quite a big difference between and

To be honest, is a great choice only in case you see your blog as a place to share your thoughts.

Yeah, it won't cost you a single cent and that's awesome.

However, the good news ends here. will limit you on all of these fronts:

  1. Number of available plugins and website themes
  2. Possibility to connect Google Analytics
  3. Content ownership
  4. Security

On top of that, if you build your site on, the platform will add a sub-domain to it.

Meaning, if your chosen name is "My Happy Day" for example, what actually you'll end is

Needless to say, that's not a great situation for those of you who are at least a bit business-oriented.

Especially when combining and BlueHost will cost you $3,95/month and will allow you to go above and beyond with your blog.

But let's keep our focus on the best free blogging platforms.

Make no mistake, among the free blogging options, this one enjoys the most popularity.

By all means, it's understandable - Blogger has been around for much longer than any of them.

An interesting fact - it belongs to the Almighty Google.

Therefore, you shouldn't be surprised that  Blogger is more than decent for a free platform:

  1. Remarkably easy to use
  2. More options for customization
  3. You can create an unlimited numbers of blogs
  4. Access to Google Analytics

Most importantly, Blogger will allow you to make money from your content:

Once you create your blog on it, Google AdSense will be integrated automatically.

Hey, you won't even have to bother going through the approval process on your own!

3) Wix

the best free blogging platforms - wix

Better known as one of the best drag-and-drop website builders in the world, Wix is a force to be reckoned with.

One of the things that make it stand out is the free hosting included.

So, here is all that you'll need to do to start a blog on Wix:

  1. Sign up
  2. Decide on a building process
  • Allow Wix Al to finish the work based on your preferences
  • Do it yourself

If you choose door number 2, just pick a template and customize it, simple as that.

Now, Wix offers a free trial.  But once that trial is over, there is a price to be paid (the cheapest plan is $11/month).

In my opinion, Wix is probably not the best choice for a newbie blogger.

Firstly, the free version offers way less than WordPress and will force Wix Ads on your site.

Secondly, if you can't imagine your site without a professional drag-and-drop builder, Thrive Architect is your cheaper option ($67/year).  Not to mention, it has so much more to offer!

Quite frankly, if you can't get enough of the drag-and-drop website builders, then you'll appreciate Weebly just as much as Wix.

On that note, here are the essential facts about it:

  1. Beginner-friendly and will provide you with all of the necessary tools to start your blog
  2. Easy to customize pre-built templates
  3. Allows you to switch website themes
  4. Built-in analytics and ad space

Just like Wix, you'll have to pay to keep using Weebly when your free trial is over.

The cheaper plan you'll be able to get starts from $8/month.

the best free blogging platforms - tumblr

Generally, one can say that Tumblr favors the younger audience just by looking at it.

What makes it different is that the focus here is much more on watching than on writing.

Meaning, if you think of Tumblr as more of a Social Media than a blogging platform, you wouldn't be far from the truth.

Don't get me wrong, your  content will gain attention once it gets reposted because that's how Tumblr works.

But if you ask me, the best you can do is to keep Tumblr for your own personal use and don't rely on it for business goals.

However, if you really want to try your luck, then you'll be glad to know that it will allow you to use affiliate links and display ads on your page.

Now, I think that it wouldn't hurt if I throw a few more names into the mix, do you agree?

However, keep in mind that the following free platforms work in a bit different way than the rest:

  1. Medium - even though Medium is a blogging site, you should think of it as a place to connect with fellow bloggers and writers.  Likewise, don't try to center your business around it.
  2. Ghost - not a bad choice, not an excellent one either. You can download the software for free, but you'll still need to pay for hosting.
  3. Joomla - this platform's vibe reminds me of going back to the basics.  To clarify, its editor is quite similar to Microsoft Word.
